The Bender Games have been around for as long as anyone can remember… or seventy-four years, to be exact.

A long time ago, the benders and non-benders lived in peace and harmony, but that’s all over now. Rising from the ashes of the Great Catastrophe, the non-benders took control of the nation called Panem. The water, earth, fire, and airbenders have lived in terror of the Capitol for the last hundred years. Just seventy-five years ago, the inhabitants of District 13 organized and executed a rebellion, only to be obliterated by the Capitol.

Every year since then, two tributes between the ages of 12 and 18 have been reaped from each district to fight to the death in The Bender Games.

What will happen when a few brave benders finally decide to stand together and fight?

Katniss Everdeen | (FC: Jennifer Lawrence) | Age 16 | District 12 | Firebender, unknowingly the Avatar

Katniss was born in the Seam, the poor, coal mining area of District Twelve. After her father was killed in a mine collapse, she was forced to raise and care for her sister Primrose after her mother becomes an emotional wreck. She hunts weekly with Gale and works to keep her family from starving by trading in the illegal black market, the Hob. When her sister is chosen for the games, Katniss bravely steps forward as a volunteer in the 74th Bender Games.

Sample:

Katniss trudged forward with a grim look etched on her face. The light of day was beginning to fade into darkness, and with it, her last chance at killing some game to trade. Gale had taken ill, and desperately needed some medicine that she would never be able to afford without some extra meat.

Her traps, luckily, were full. A few squirrels, a rabbit or two, and the fish she caught as she ate her meager dinner. Katniss produced a small flame in her hands. Easy to hide but big enough to see by. She loaded up her bags and began the journey home.

She had no issues on the way home, but as she reached the fence, her bag began to tear. Muttering under her breath, she pulled it through the hole in the fence and tied the bag up as best she could. Just as she was beginning to leave, footsteps began to echo down the alley. Heart pounding, she grabbed her bag and ran, ducking in to another alley close by. The footsteps grew closer, and then slowly began to fade away. Her heart began to settle - it was just an ordinary patrol, She hadn’t been caught. Yet.

Jett Lazuli | (FC: Darren Criss) | Age 24 | Stylist | Earthbender

Jett is a brand new stylist for the Bender Games. He, like most stylists, lived in District 8 for most of his life. His family conceded to the Capitol and moved to a Loyalist District just before he was born, in order to raise him in a better environment. He is part of the internal conspiracy against the Capitol, formed by the other stylists.

Emily “Foxface” Reid | (FC: Jacqueline Emerson) | Age 15 | District 5 | Earthbender

Emily Reid was born into a large family. Both of her parents and her oldest brother work full days at the power plants, where their bending powers are used to transfer large amounts of coal to the ovens. When they were at work, she and her older sister were left to take care of their other siblings, which usually resulted in Emily and two of her brothers sneaking away and leaving her sister with the little ones.

Even though she doesn’t need tesserae, there are other necessary goods that sometimes can’t be afforded. In this case Emily and her brothers may turn to theft; one distracts the salesman while the others take a few items, which they know won’t be missed soon.

In spite of her fiery red hair, Emily doesn’t stand out. She is only 5’5” tall and a quick runner, but her biggest advantage is the ability to think clear and fast under threatening circumstances. She is aware of this, and is sure to use this to her advantage in the arena.

Emily Reid was born into a large family. Bending is a large part of life for the most people in District five, and unlike many other Districts it can actually give one work: water-, fire-, and earthbending are all used to gain more energy with less recources and time. However, for this to work, the inhabitants need to be well fed, and because of this it is the District with the lowest number of children claiming tesserae.

But even though she doesn’t need tesserae, there are other necessary goods that sometimes can’t be afforded. In this case Emily and her brothers may turn to theft; one distracts the salesman while the others take a few items, which they know won’t be missed soon.

Everybody was staring at her.
Thousands of eyes were turned towards her, staring at her face and burning on her back. Emily didn’t even know where to look, her eyes shot back and forth, focusing on some familiar faces, until they finally rested on a large screen with her own face on it.
She looked like an animal, moments before it would die.
The image pulled her back to reality and she took a deep breath, smoothed out the wrinkles in the fabric of her green dress, and took her first step towards the stage. The crowd immediately split, and she reached the stage soon enough.
She’d calmed down more, and from the stage she sought out her family while the male Tribute was being chosen. Her mother was crying already, while her father was trying to stay strong.
Tears were burning behing her eyes too, but she needed to stay strong. She couldn’t be an easy target. She just needed to distract herself…
I need to learn about edible plants. They could put anything poisonous into the arena. She told herself, remembering a few years ago, when everything was poisonous. They usually went with real plants, luckily.
I need to learn how to make a snow shelter. That way, she wouldn’t have to freeze but still be camouflaged.
Of course, not only snow camouflage… There was that year when the Victor managed to hide and wait until the Gamemaker’s disasters had killed all other Tributes…

Maybe she did stand a chance after all.

Marina Sutton lives in District 4 with her parents, older sister, and younger brother. She is a hotheaded girl who is not the slightest bit afraid to speak her mind. Despite her short temper, she is quite a hopeless romantic and a dreamer. Whenever she needs to clear her mind, the water is her escape. Though her strongest skill is swimming, she has near genius intelligence and is a hard working. 

From the moment she could walk, she was bending water. Her passion for waterbending often got her into trouble with her teachers, parents, and sometimes peacekeepers. It is said that her ancestors were famous benders, prominent in the war. Her defiance of the Capitol stems from them and her desire to be like them.
